Mitsubishi Destinator destined for Zimbabwe

Mitsubishi’s all-new seven-seat midsize SUV, the Destinator, looks perfectly suited for Zimbabwe—where weekends can mean school runs in Harare, fast stretches toward Kwekwe, and dusty detours that test both patience and ground clearance. Developed under the theme “Confidence Booster for Energetic Families,” the Destinator isn’t about rock crawling but delivering confident, comfortable travel across mixed surfaces that reflect real family life.
First Impressions: Gravitas with a Bit of Swagger
Mitsubishi describes the design as “Gravitas & Dynamism.” The result is a stable, planted SUV clearly prioritising practicality over sporty pretence. Its raised stance, 18-inch wheels, and sculpted fender flares promise real-world toughness, while protective cladding helps resist scuffs and stone chips. The front’s Dynamic Shield design is bold yet restrained, headlined by a layered acrylic grille with a honeycomb pattern beneath—a futuristic touch that feels premium without being flashy.
At the back, the Hexaguard Horizon motif and T shaped LED tail lamps nod to Mitsubishi’s Pajero heritage. The wide, upright treatment projects stability while remaining timeless—an important trait for vehicles expected to age gracefully on Zimbabwe’s diverse roads.
Cabin Comfort: A True Three-Row Experience
Local buyers often distrust “seven seaters” where the third row is an afterthought. The Destinator addresses that directly. It offers proper space for seven adults, with special attention paid to headroom and knee room. The third-row seating position is slightly raised for better visibility, and dedicated rear air vents help keep all passengers comfortable during long, hot drives—a small but vital detail.
A panoramic sunroof, 64 colour ambient lighting, and high-quality materials add to the premium atmosphere. These touches transform long night drives into pleasant experiences rather than endurance runs. Practicality is equally strong: an abundance of cupholders, seatback tables, and both Type A and Type C USB ports across rows. Even with the third row in use, there’s space for multiple water bottles, and with 40:20:40 folding in the second row and 50:50 in the third, cargo flexibility is excellent for families balancing passengers and luggage.
Tech and Infotainment: Balanced Modernity
Dominating the dashboard is a 12.3 inch Smartphone link Display Audio (SDA) system, paired with an 8 inch driver display. Mitsubishi includes subtle heritage cues like a Pajero inspired multimeter layout but avoids overdoing nostalgia.
A standout feature is the Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium eight speaker audio system, offering seat based sound modes. It’s a real family-car advantage, reducing arguments over volume and improving cabin serenity.
Engine and Drivability: Smart Use of Turbo Power
Power comes from a 1.5 litre MIVEC turbo producing 120 kW and 250 Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. The drivetrain is tuned for linear, smooth acceleration—ideal for both city traffic and highway climbs with passengers and cargo.
Though front wheel drive, the Destinator employs Mitsubishi’s Active Yaw Control (AYC) and traction management to maintain composure when grip varies. Five selectable drive modes—Normal, Wet, Tarmac, Gravel, and Mud—speak directly to Zimbabwe’s unpredictable mix of surfaces, letting the SUV adapt seamlessly from tar to dust to mud.
Zimbabwe Readiness: Ground Clearance and Peace of Mind
Ground clearance is a highlight: 214 mm (244 mm without under cover), supported by practical approach and departure angles. These numbers translate to real confidence on rutted rural detours or urban potholes.
Safety is comprehensive. Mitsubishi’s Safety Sensing Suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Lane Change Detection (LCDN), six airbags, and a multi around monitor for full visibility.
Connectivity features extend peace of mind: emergency call support, automated post airbag deployment alerts, and smartphone access for checking fuel level, vehicle location, or activating the air conditioning remotely—all practical tools for long distance families.
Verdict: A Confident Fit for Local Families
If Mitsubishi prices the Destinator competitively when it arrives in Zimbabwe, it could become a quiet favourite. It’s a genuine seven seater with the ground clearance, comfort, and safety tech to handle everyday demands—from city commutes to unpaved excursions. Rather than pretending to be an expedition SUV, it offers what most families truly need: dependable performance, thoughtful versatility, and reassuring capability across Zimbabwe’s real world roads.
